Screw pile solution for rear house extension with protected trees

 

10 screw piles were installed for a part single/part double story rear extension to this house in Chingford. The clay soil had a high plasticity and was susceptible to movement, both swelling and contracting depending on the moisture content.  In these London clays, piling was required to get below the top 2.5m to more stable material below.

30% of the extension area was also subject to a root protection zone where excavation for standard foundations was prohibited to prevent root damage.

Our handheld hydraulic piling rig was used to install the 10 piles to a depth of between 6.5 – 8 metres.
